Abstract

The purpose of the article is to identify topical problems of the transformation of universities into research universities based on the analysis of problems and prospects of universities of this category through a retrospective of their evolution. The article describes the general characteristics and criteria of the research university, the evolution of the format of the activities of universities. The article also examines the experience of foreign universities successfully moving towards world academic heights, the strategy of creating world-class research universities.
