After the Cold War ended, a revision of nuclear weapons began in the context of international security. The world was divided in opinions. Some scientists argued that there were still reasons justifying the existence of nuclear arsenals, while others supported the idea of a nuclear-free world. Today, more than twenty years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, discussions on this issue are still ongoing. The purpose of this article is to show how nuclear deterrence has developed, how it works today, and why it is still an important part of the national strategies of key international actors.
